The French government says it is determined to fight Moammar Gaddafi and will urge parliament to approve an extension of the French military operation in Libya.
French government spokeswoman Valerie Pecresse says France wants to “send a signal to Col. Gaddafi of the total determination of France and its allies” with the parliamentary vote July 12.
France was instrumental in launching the NATO-led operation of airstrikes against Gaddafi’s forces, in a U.N.-mandated mission to protect civilians resisting his four-decade regime.
France fired the first airstrikes in the campaign March 19. Parliamentary approval is required for France to continue the campaign beyond four months. The vote is expected to pass.
