When Cars talk…

Ibrahim Bugagis, a former bank employee in Benghazi, has come up with a rather unique way of getting media out amidst the ongoing Libyan civil war. His “Picture Car” is one of the more popular attractions near Benghazi’s main court house, where much of the city’s revolutionary activity takes place.
“I wasn’t planning on making this a project, I was only using it to deliver an idea,” Bugagis explained, “but I see now that it’s a huge success.”
The pictures on the car are mostly photoshopped, displaying caricatures of Colonel Gaddafi, as well as imagery from the revolution.
“What I want most is a picture of me with Mustafa Abdul Jalil,” Bugagis said, referring to the leader of the rebels’ National Transitional Council, “but I don’t want to make this one with photoshop.”
As popular as the Picture Car has become in Benghazi, there are many who worry about Bugagis’ safety.
“My friends keep telling me be careful, the fifth column is still here,” Bugagis said. Security analysts have warned in recent weeks of opportunistic attacks by fifth columnists, pro-Gaddafi remnants. They are thought to be responsible for the bombing of a major hotel in Benghazi earlier this month.
“The car was shot at twice but I wasn’t in the car,” Bugagis recounted, “once in front of the Kateba [a rebel garrison] and once in Ras Lanof.”
Bugagis is not afraid though, and finds comfort in the praise of the car’s fans.
“The best thing this cars has brought to me is how people keep telling me ‘god bless you’ and ‘we’re praying for you’,” Bugagis said. “To me this is enough reward.”
Alive in Libya visited Bugagis near the courthouse this week to talk with him about his now famous Picture Car.
